Job Description

We are supporting a technology organisation seeking an experienced System Performance Architect to shape the performance architecture of its next-generation operating system.

This senior position sits at the intersection of operating systems, hardware and chipsets. You will develop strategies that improve speed and responsiveness while carefully managing power consumption and thermal limits. Your work will span early research and architectural design through prototyping, implementation and deployment on end devices.

The Opportunity

You will lead complex optimisation initiatives across CPU, GPU, memory and other system resources. This will involve designing intelligent scheduling mechanisms, resolving low-level performance bottlenecks and improving how applications interact with the operating system and underlying hardware.

The role requires both strategic thinking and strong engineering execution. You will turn emerging systems research into practical technical roadmaps and deliver measurable improvements to application responsiveness, interaction latency, animation smoothness and overall device performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design integrated scheduling mechanisms across CPU, GPU, memory and wider system resources.
  • Develop optimisation strategies covering task priority, workload grouping, core selection and frequency scaling.
  • Improve coordination between operating-system kernels and hardware.
  • Balance performance targets against power-efficiency and thermal constraints.
  • Take solutions from architectural design and prototyping through implementation and device deployment.
  • Analyse application behaviour and identify performance bottlenecks within core operating-system components.
  • Improve responsiveness, interaction latency, animation smoothness and the broader user experience.
  • Design and optimise high-performance system components and runtime mechanisms.
  • Research modern APIs, runtime technologies and performance-focused application-development models.
  • Create frameworks and system capabilities that make it easier to build high-performance applications.
  • Improve the relationship between application frameworks and underlying system resources.
  • Monitor developments in operating systems, system scheduling, hardware-aware optimisation and academic research.
  • Translate promising research and industry developments into practical platform roadmaps.
  • Identify architectural improvements spanning hardware, kernels, runtimes and applications.
  • Collaborate with research, engineering, product and international teams.

Required Experience

  • Strong hands-on experience in at least one of the following areas:
  • Operating-system performance optimisation.
  • System scheduling.
  • Kernel development.
  • Hardware-software co-design.
  • System architecture.
  • Practical knowledge of CPU or GPU scheduling, memory and bandwidth management, priority management, task grouping, core selection or dynamic frequency scaling.
  • A strong understanding of system design that accounts for performance, power consumption and thermal limits.
  • Deep knowledge of operating-system-level application performance and performance debugging.
  • The ability to diagnose and resolve bottlenecks in complex system software.
  • Familiarity with high-performance APIs, runtime systems, application frameworks and performance-oriented software design.
  • A record of taking technical solutions from initial design through implementation and deployment.
  • The ability to demonstrate measurable improvements in system or application performance.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • The ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary and international teams.
  • Based in Amsterdam or willing to relocate.

Additional Experience of Interest

  • Developing or optimising operating-system kernels, schedulers or runtime systems.
  • Working with heterogeneous compute architectures.
  • Improving mobile, embedded or other resource-constrained operating systems.
  • Using performance profiling, tracing, benchmarking and system-level debugging tools.
  • Converting academic research into production-ready architecture or software.
  • Understanding the relationship between application workloads, operating systems and hardware.
